Dr. Emily Altman’s answer to Are facials worth the cost as a way to treat acne scarring? Cosmetic Dermatologist NJ
Facials can only make acne scarring worse by creating more inflammation. At best they do nothing for acne scars. So paying for a facial in order to get rid of acne scars is not worth it at all.
Depending on what you mean by acne scarring, there are different treatments for it. Often my patients refer to hyperpigmentation as scarring. Scarring actually refers to a change in skin texture, with or without a color change.
Acne scars can be atrophic, such as boxcar or ice pick scars. These can be treated with fractional laser resurfacing. If there are just a few atrophic acne scars, they can be treated with subscission (inserting a sharp instrument and cutting apart the scar collagen underneath), filling the scar with a dermal filler like Restylane or Radiesse, or punch excision, where the scar is cut out and edges sutured together (or alternatively the excised scar can be replaced by similar skin taken from elsewhere on the body).
Acne scars can also be hypertrophic or keloidal. These are more difficult to treat but can be flattened with injections of cortisone.
