Sculptra® Aesthetic at Summit Medical Group

A young face has fullness and roundness in the cheeks, under the eyes, in the lips, along the jawline and around the mouth. This fullness gives the face its radiant, youthful appearance.

Starting with age 30, the collagen, fat and bony structures of the face begin to diminish.  The face becomes thinner and tapered, and starts to develop wrinkles and folds. This loss of volume leads to the appearance of hills and valleys on the face, where only round curves were present before.
The best way to return your facial contours to their more youthful, glowing appearance is to replenish lost volume.

Scuptra®Aesthetic is unique among dermal fillers.  As Sculptra replaces lost collagen, it provides a foundation that gently restores the look of fullness and glow by correcting your shallow to deep wrinkles and folds.  These natural-looking results can last up to 2 years.

Sculptra® Aesthetic treatment is ideal for

  • Overall facial sculpting and volume restoration
  • Folds and wrinkles of the face
  • Naso-labial folds (upper and lower laugh lines)
  • Marionette lines
  • Augmentation of cheek bones and chin
  • Defining the jawline
  • Hollow temples

*Some procedures are off-label usages of FDA-approved products.

Frequently Asked Questions about Sculptra®Aesthetic

What is Sculptra®Aesthetic?

Scuptra®Aesthetic is an FDA-approved, minimally-invasive cosmetic treatment for restoring volume and creating a fuller, more youthful appearance to your face.  Scuptra® Aesthetic is also known as the “liquid facelift.”

Scuptra®Aesthetic is made from tiny particles of synthetic poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA).  PLLA is biodegradable and biocompatible, which means it will not harm your body.  These particles of PLLA stimulate your skin’s own collagen production, gradually restoring volume and correcting defects caused by loss of soft tissue and fat.

PLLA has been used for many years in dissolvable stitches and medical soft tissue implants.  Our muscles produce a natural form of lactic acid when we exercise.

Because it is not animal-derived, Scuptra®Aesthetic does not contain any animal proteins, reducing the risk of allergic reactions and animal-based disease transmission.  Scuptra®Aesthetic does not require pre-injection testing for allergies.

How does Sculptra®Aesthetic work?

SculptraScuptra®Aesthetic is not a wrinkle filler, but a bioactivating volumizer.  It targets the underlying causes of the signs of aging.  When injected into the skin, PLLA triggers a deposition of your own new collagen, gradually replacing lost volume.
As this new collagen is formed, it fills in the hollow areas, lifting and correcting wrinkles and folds over 3 to 6 months without the need for surgery.

After Scuptra®Aesthetic treatments, skin texture is fuller and firmer, and there is more convexity of the facial contours.

How many treatments are required?

An average number of treatment sessions of Scuptra®Aesthetic is 3 injection sessions over a few months.  The sessions are spread out because Scuptra®Aesthetic needs time to replace lost collagen gradually for a natural-looking appearance that can last up to 2 years.

How long does Sculptra®Aesthetic last?

The natural, youthful results may last up to 2 years or more in many patients.

Where can Sculptra®Aesthetic be used?

Scuptra®Aesthetic is effective in correcting volume loss in hollow cheeks and temples, chin and other large facial areas to restore the face to its fuller, more radiant appearance.

What can I expect with Sculptra®Aesthetic treatment?

Treatment with Scuptra®Aesthetic is a quick, in-office procedure with minimal downtime.  Prior to injection, Scuptra®Aesthetic is mixed with a small amount of a local anesthetic to minimize any discomfort during the procedure.

How long does the treatment take?

A treatment normally takes about 30 minutes, although time may vary depending upon the area being treated.

How soon will I see results?

Scuptra®Aesthetic does not give immediate results.  The real volumizing effect of Scuptra®Aesthetic lies in its ability to trigger your own collagen formation.  This process takes place over a period of several months. Usually several injection sessions are needed to accomplish optimal volume replacement.

Are there any potential side effects?

Side effects of Scuptra®Aesthetic may include injection site discomfort, redness, bruising, itching and swelling. In rare cases small nodules may form under the skin that are sometimes noticeable when pressing on the treated area. Some nodules may have delayed onset.

To minimize the chances of nodule formation, the injected areas will be massaged immediately after the injection session, and patients are instructed to massage the injected areas firmly for five minutes five times a day for five days.

Who should not use Sculptra®Aesthetic?

Scuptra®Aesthetic is intended for use in people with healthy immune systems as a treatment regimen of up to 4 injection sessions that are scheduled 3-4 weeks apart for correction of shallow to deep facial contour deficiencies.

You should not use Scuptra®Aesthetic if you are allergic to any ingredient of the product or have a history of keloid formation or hypertrophic scarring.

Safety and effectiveness of Scuptra®Aesthetic has not been evaluated in subjects who are pregnant, lactating, breast feeding, or under 18 years of age.

Scuptra®Aesthetic should not be injected while you are having an active skin infection or inflammation in the treatment area and should not be injected into the lips or periorbital area.
