  • Upper Lip & Chin
  • Underarms
  • Bikini
  • Legs
  • Arms
  • Back & Shoulders

Laser Hair Removal is a noninvasive treatment that safely removes unwanted hair without damaging the skin. Laser Hair Removal employs an intense, pulsating beam of light that passes through the skin to the hair follicle where the energy is absorbed and transformed into heat, disabling the follicle while leaving the surrounding area unaffected.

Permanent hair reduction is defined as the long-term, stable reduction in the number of hairs re-growing after a treatment regimen.

Laser Hair Removal is recommended in packages of five or more in order to disable most of the active hair follicles.  If you're considering a treatment and are interested in learning how Laser Hair Removal can help achieve more smooth carefree skin, please schedule a consultation with Summit Medical Group Dermatology by calling (908) 277-8668.

Frequently Asked Questions about Laser Hair Removal

What is Laser Hair Removal?

In general, laser light targets the melanin in the hair shaft and the hair follicle to injure and destroy the hair. Overall, because light blond, red or white hair does not contain very much melanin, laser hair removal is not effective in these hair types.

Is Laser Hair Removal Permanent?

Laser Hair Removal can permanently disable the hair you have in an active growth cycle on the day of your treatment.  Follicles that are not active will enter the growth phase in a few weeks and will then be treatable.  Most active hair follicles must be treated more than once.  Circumstances such as pregnancy, menopause, certain medications and hormonal conditions can trigger a dormant follicle to grow in.  Dormant follicles are not active and therefore not able to be treated.  The new growth, however, will be much lighter in color and considerably finer in texture because of the procedure.  If this should happen, a touch-up treatment would be required.

Where can Laser Hair Removal be achieved?

Anywhere on the skin’s surface.

Why does hair grow on my face?

In women, unwanted facial hair often appears on the upper lip, chin and sides of the face. Such hair growth can be genetic, that is the tendency to have facial hair is inherited from your parents. Other causes, such as hormonal abnormalities can trigger new growth of facial hair. If you are experiencing an abnormal growth of hair on these facial areas or if the hair is very thick, we will help you to determine the underlying causes before you embark on a hair removal regimen.

Can tanned skin be treated?

Tanned skin can be unsafe to treat, so always inform us if you have been tanning or exposed to the sun within the last three weeks.  We will adjust your treatment settings or alter your treatment regimen accordingly to give you the safest most effective experience.

How long does the treatment take?

A treatment normally takes between 15 and 45 minutes, although time varies depending upon the area being treated.

How soon will I see results?

The hair that was treated will begin to work its way out of the follicle and will start to fall out between 10-14 days after the treatment.

Are there any potential side effects?

Side effects may include slight redness (most patients return to natural color within 20 -30 minutes). Pigmentary changes of the skin, blisters and hot spots are rare but occasionally occur.

How much does Laser Hair Removal cost at Summit Medical Group?

Each body area has a different price and every person’s skin requires a different number of treatments for the best results. Please contact us for a specific cost.
