What is Laser Hair Removal?

At Advanced Skin Wisdom, we utilize broad band light treatments (a form of intense pulsed light, IPL) to offer a safe and effective method of removing unwanted body hair.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is a broad-based light which is different from a laser in that it has multiple wavelengths instead of one single wavelength of light. This means it targets many different things. IPL devices, such as Sciton's Broad Band Light (BBL) have filters which can narrow the band of wavelengths to make the device more specific. In general IPLs have wavelengths which target melanin, and these wavelengths are what target the melanin in the hair shaft and the hair follicle to injure and destroy the hair. An IPL device is most effective on lighter skin with darker hair. Overall, laser hair removal is not very effective on light blonde, red or white hair.

Is Advanced Skin Wisdom’s Laser Hair Removal Permanent?

Laser Hair Removal can permanently disable the hair you have in an active growth cycle on the day of your treatment.  Follicles that are not active will enter the growth phase in a few weeks and will then be treatable.  Most active hair follicles must be treated more than once.  Circumstances such as pregnancy, menopause, certain medications and hormonal conditions can trigger a dormant follicle to grow in.  Dormant follicles are not active and therefore not able to be treated.  The new growth, however, will be much lighter in color and considerably finer in texture because of the procedure.  If this should happen, a touch-up treatment would be required.

Why does hair grow on my face?

In women, unwanted facial hair often appears on the upper lip, chin and sides of the face. Such hair growth can be genetic, that is the tendency to have facial hair is inherited from your parents. Other causes, such as hormonal abnormalities can trigger new growth of facial hair. If you are experiencing an abnormal growth of hair on these facial areas or if the hair is very thick, we will help you to determine the underlying causes before you embark on a hair removal regimen.

Can tanned skin be treated?

Tanned skin can be unsafe to treat so always inform us if you have been tanning or exposed to the sun within the last three weeks.  We will adjust your treatment settings or alter your treatment regime accordingly to give you the safest most effective experience.

How long does the treatment take?

A treatment normally takes between 15 and 45 minutes, although time varies depending upon the area being treated.

How soon will I see results?

The hair that was treated will begin to work its way out of the follicle and will start to fall out between 10-14 days after the treatment. 

Are there any potential side effects?

Side effects may include slight redness (most clients return to natural color within 20 -30 minutes). Pigmentary changes of the skin, blisters and hot spots are rare but occasionally occur.
