BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® at Summit Medical Group
The “expression lines” also known as crow’s feet or frown lines, initially seen only in emotional discussions in your thirties or forties – result from muscle contractions. When you concentrate, squint, or frown, the muscles of your face contract, causing your skin to furrow and fold. After years of frequent contraction, those dynamic wrinkles can linger even after the muscles are at rest.
Used safely in medicine for decades, BOTOX®Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxinA) and Dysport® (abobotulinumtoxinA) are both FDA-approved therapeutic muscle-relaxing agents that target the muscles that cause wrinkles. The skin and persistent lines that develop over time smooth out when the muscles of facial expression are relaxed.

Frown lines (between your brows)
Worry lines (on the forehead)
Drooping lip corners, lines around the mouth
Horizontal and vertical neck lines
BOTOX® Cosmetic can also be used for facial sculpting, such as lifting the eyebrows and creating a beautiful eyebrow arch, giving a more open and youthful appearance to the eyes.
Dysport® is simply another brand of botulinum toxin A (abobotulinumtoxinA), the active ingredient in BOTOX® Cosmetic, it does carry with it certain clinical advantages related to faster timing of onset and “smoothness” in larger treatment areas which Dr. Altman can discuss with you in detail at your next office visit.
With Dr. Altman’s expert BOTOX® Cosmetic injection technique and experience, you can expect softening and smoothing of your frown and forehead lines, as well as crow’s feet around your eyes. Ask us about other rejuvenating and sculpting effects that can be achieved with botulinum toxin injections during your consultation - the treatment possibilities with BOTOX® Cosmetic are increasing daily!
Treatments are fast, simple, minimally invasive and take only 15-20 minutes. BOTOX® keeps the muscles that cause lines relaxed for three to six months. Results are visible within 7-10 days after injection. If you're considering a wrinkle treatment and are interested in learning how BOTOX® or a dermal filler (Juvéderm®, Restylane®, or Perlane®) can help you look younger please schedule a consultation with Dr. Altman at Summit Medical Group Dermatology(908) 277-8668.
Both BOTOX® and Dysport® are types of botulinum toxin type A, purified protein that is produced by the clostridium botulinum bacteria. There have been no serious side effects associated with their use by dermatologists. This is a natural, extremely safe, although temporary method of improving wrinkles and signs of aging of the face and neck.

Frequently Asked Questions About BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport®
Where is BOTOX® Cosmetic used?
BOTOX® Cosmetic primarily addresses lines in the skin known as “dynamic wrinkles,” which includes crow’s feet around the eyes and wrinkles visible while smiling, laughing or raising the eyebrows. These lines are normally less noticeable when your face is relaxed. BOTOX® Cosmetic may also be used to relax the vertical bands in the neck.
Am I a good candidate?
Candidates generally range from the ages of 25 to 70, as the majority of wrinkles in people over 70 are considered “static” and do not disappear when the skin relaxes. There are other procedures which target static wrinkles. Each patient is unique, however, and private consultations are recommended to determine the best and most effective treatment plan. Patients with certain medical conditions, such as conditions that affect your muscles and nerves, are not candidates for BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments. Be sure to discuss your medical history and any prescription and non-prescription medications as well as vitamins and herbal products you are taking during your consultation.
How is BOTOX® Cosmetic administered at Summit Medical Group?
A few drops of BOTOX® Cosmetic are injected with a tiny needle into the muscle that is causing the wrinkle. Over the next five to seven days the BOTOX® effect begins. BOTOX® blocks the contraction of the muscle, which weakens the muscle and causes the wrinkles in the overlying skin to gradually soften and often disappear. The effect lasts for about two to four months, with an average of about three months of wrinkle-free face. There is much more to the effect though. BOTOX® can also be injected into specific muscles of the forehead to raise the eyebrows and create a beautiful arch, and make the eyes appear larger. I call this the BOTOX® facelift or sculpting of the face with BOTOX®. This is a non-surgical approach to the facelift and can be helpful as a first step in someone considering a more permanent approach such as a facelift.
The amount of liquid which enters the skin is very small, and patients experience only minimal discomfort in the form of a slight pinch. No anesthetic is necessary, and you can continue with your everyday activities immediately following the procedure.
When will I notice the difference, and how long will it last?
Patients usually notice a softening in the appearance of their frown lines within 24 to 48 hours. The area may continue to improve for up to a month. Results normally last for three to six months, and repeat treatments result in longer-lasting effects.
What happens as the treatment begins to wear off?
After three to four months, the effects of BOTOX® Cosmetic begin to wear off and wrinkles reappear, though often not as deep or visible as they were prior to treatment. In order to sustain smooth skin and a youthful look, three to four injections are usually required in the first year. By returning for repeat treatments, fewer injections are required in the future to maintain young-looking skin.
Is there any downtime?
No. Following treatment, patients usually return to their jobs and normal activities immediately. It is recommended, however, that you avoid exercise, heavy lifting and massaging the injected area for one day.
How much does BOTOX® Cosmetic cost?
BOTOX® Cosmetic is sold by the unit. The number of units required to treat each area varies.

What are injection-related side effects?
The injection needle is very small, which typically avoids any discomfort. The pinching sensation experienced lasts only a short time, and you will return to your usual activities without any painful after-effects. Other injection side effects may include infection, inflammation, swelling, redness and/or bleeding/bruising.
What are the other possible side effects of BOTOX®?
Any time BOTOX® Cosmetic is injected, there is a possibility of bruising, which normally resolves within 5-7 days without a scar.
When injected around the eyes there is a small risk of drooping of the brows (called ptosis). This is also temporary and can be improved with medicated eye drops.
When injected around the mouth or neck, there is some associated weakness of the overlying muscles, which can lead to mild drooling.
Although BOTOX® is a very safe treatment, it should not be used in pregnant women or anyone with some specific neurological diseases.
When injected into the underarms or hands, there may be a mild, temporary weakness of the hand. For example, it might be more difficult to open a tight jar, but typing ability would not be affected.
